Business Systems Analyst

Most engagements start the same way. A client knows the outcome they want and cannot describe the workflow that produces it. Somebody has to sit with the executive sponsor, the process owner, and the two people who run the work every day, then turn what they say into a specification a builder implements.

Why this seat exists

F3 Insights builds business systems for executives at mid-market companies. The work runs across industries and across the executive team, reaching the CEO, COO, CFO, and CRO, through three practices: fractional CFO leadership, AI enablement, and revenue engineering.

This is a client-facing analyst seat, not an in-house one. The work is engagement work: translating operational goals into technical specifications, evaluating vendors, and carrying an implementation through user acceptance and adoption. Former consultants are encouraged to apply. The habits carry over directly: scoping under pressure, writing for an executive and an operator in the same document, and running a client conversation that ends in a decision.

What you would own

Seven areas. The first engagement is the reference rebuild. From there the pattern extends into new client work and you keep it running.

Client discovery and requirements gathering

Lead stakeholder workshops and interviews to surface pain points and project objectives. Turn ambiguous client requests into Functional Requirement Documents and System Requirement Specifications. Map current-state processes and design the target-state workflow.

Solution design and architecture alignment

Evaluate third-party platforms such as Salesforce, HubSpot, and SAP, plus custom API architectures, against client requirements. Work with solution architects and technical leads to produce user stories and acceptance criteria. Run gap analysis that separates standard platform capability from custom development.

Data and process modeling

Design data flow diagrams, entity relationship models, and system integration workflows. Audit current data structures and set the migration, mapping, and governance strategy before anything moves.

Personas, journeys, and milestones

Define who the system serves and at what altitude, from the executive sponsor who approves it to the director-level operator who lives in it daily. Convert client goals into measurable outputs and user milestones, agreed before the build starts.

Quality assurance and implementation support

Write test scripts and lead user acceptance testing with client teams. Maintain the traceability matrix so delivered code matches documented requirements. Triage defects during testing and support post-launch hypercare.

Change management and client enablement

Build training materials, standard operating procedures, and system documentation. Run end-user training to drive adoption across client departments. Hold stakeholder alignment together through technical and process shifts.

AI and agents in the work

Use agents to speed up analysis, draft artifacts, and pressure-test your own specifications, with human review before anything reaches a client. Specify agent-assisted steps inside client workflows, including where a person approves and what gets logged.

Useful, not required

  • Delivery across more than one industry, and the discipline to learn an unfamiliar operating model quickly.
  • Control mapping against NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, or SOC 2, and comfort talking to an assessor.
  • Formal change management training, or SOP and curriculum design for client teams.

Who this suits

Our clients are executives and the operators who report to them, not product teams. A specification nobody outside the project reads is a liability here. You ask the uncomfortable scoping question early, you separate what a client said from what you concluded, and you are comfortable having your own document marked up.

Engagement terms

Work starts on a defined scope with a written statement of work, usually a discovery and requirements phase on one client engagement. Good work earns the next engagement. As the practice grows we expect this seat to become full-time. No date is attached to it, and we will state plainly where things stand at each renewal.

Classification
1099 independent contractor, with a statement of work per engagement. You carry your own equipment and insurance.
Compensation
Hourly or fixed fee, set at the first call and based on scope and experience.
Location and schedule
Remote, with occasional onsite client work in San Diego. Discovery weeks run heavier than build weeks.
Intellectual property
F3i owns deliverables produced under the statement of work. Background IP you bring stays yours and gets listed in the statement of work before work starts.
Term and renewal
Each statement of work is scoped in weeks, not left open-ended. Extensions run through a written amendment.
Invoicing
Invoiced monthly against the statement of work. Payment terms are stated in the statement of work.
Confidentiality
Mutual NDA signed before client systems access. Client data stays inside client-controlled environments.
